Digital illustration created for “The End is Nigh Book: A Curious Look at Death” exhibition at Light Grey Art Lab's Minneapolis gallery space. Being the gallery’s 100th (and, sadly, final) exhibition, the show explores the theme of death across history and culture.

Throughout history and cultures worldwide, butterflies are signs of transformation and change. In many cultures, seeing a black butterfly is a death omen that can be either good or bad. It symbolizes new life from an old one. This does not necessarily imply physical death is on the horizon, but rather a death of 'something', such as the end of a relationship or an idea. An encounter with a black butterfly can indicate that the person is about to be reborn or renewed in some way; it is up for interpretation of the one witnessing the butterfly's flight. Toxic Beauty depicts a black butterfly landing on an azalea; this particular flower is toxic, and in large doses can be fatal. The connection of the flower and the butterfly is up to you. What is your interpretation?

Inspired by my grandparent’s carved Black Forest cuckoo clock. When I was little I used to love watching the little bird to pop out every hour.

Junk Food, and Puffins, and Plaid, Oh My!

To properly pour absinthe using water, you will need:  a glass (a Pontarlier absinthe glass is preferred), an absinthe spoon, a sugar cube, water, and the absinthe, itself.

1.)  Pour the absinthe into the glass, equal to about one fifth of its capacity

2.)  Place the absinthe spoon on the rim of the glass, followed by the sugar cube atop the spoon

3.)  Pour a small amount of water on the sugar cube and allow it to sit for a minute or two.  Then slowly pour more water over the sugar cube until it dissolves and the required level of dilution is achieved

4.)  Stir your absinthe, and enjoy!
